Churchill Downs May 30, 2020. Our Handicapper, Craig gives his best bets. Play along at a level of your comfortable with and lets (hopefully) cash some winning tickets!
Race 1: A Maiden Claimer for Fillies and Mares to open the day and it is hard to look past #7 Our Secret Agent off her 2nd place finish at Aqueduct in March and her 3rd place finish here on her career debut in 2019. A good longshot may be #2 Hands Up who showed signs of finding her feet at Fair Grounds last time out. Bet: #9 $2 Win and #2 $2 Show.
Race 2: Fillies and Mares once again and #5 Fun Paddy looks like a horse to include in an exotic wager although stepping up in class from her last outing at Tampa. #6 Seeds Of Time and #8 Mongolian Humor look equally matched; Bet: # 5,6,8 $2 Exacta Box Cost: $12.00.
Race 3: The opening turf race of the day is for Fillies and Mares trying to break their maiden and I think it is a race where the ML favorite can be beaten. #1 Bastet has Joel Rosario on board and John Velazquez is on #5 Messina add in #11 Fashion Mo if you overlook her last start and it makes a nice Exacta Box. Bet: # 1,5,11 $2 Exacta Box Cost: $12.00.
Race 4: Colts and Geldings get their first look in and it is also the first race in our free to enter Handicapping Contest, so I will just be picking win bets for races 4 through 10. I am going to oppose the ML favorite and go for #1 Its My Bag Baby who makes their second start off a claim having wintered well at Oaklawn Park. Bet: #1 $8 Win.
Race 5: Featuring Maidens and I like the inform barn of Bret Calhoun who conditions #4 Dontneedaname who has been working very well since a 7th place finish at Fair Grounds on his career debut in the middle of February. Bet: #4 $10 Win.
Race 6: #10 Tiesto appears to have all the credentials and is the ride of Joel Rosario. Comes off a win the Grade III Palm Beach at Gulfstream Park at the end of February and his stalking style should suit this son of Super Saver. Bet #10 $10 Win.
Race 7: Is the Winning Colors Stake (GIII) for Fillies And Mares and you have to go for the multiple stakes winner #2, Break Even who won the Eight Belles Stakes (GII) here in 2019 and was runner up in the Prioress Stakes (GII) at Saratoga last summer. Bet #2 $10 Win (Best Bet)
Race 8: It will not be a great price but the bullet work on May 22 on #9 Ashiham combined with his strong finish (2nd) in a Maiden race at Gulfstream Park last month gives this Todd Pletcher horse the edge in what will be a keenly contested affair. Bet #9 $10 Win.
Race 9: A very full field of Fillies and Mares but I think this can be a hattrick on the day for Joel Rosario with #11 Dixieincandyland coming off a win over five furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park on her last start and looking every inch like she will enjoy the extra 110 yards today. Bet: #11 #10 Win
Race 10: #8 Top Speed absolutely destroyed the filed at Tampa in a $16k Optional Claimer in April and has been working very well including a recent bullet workout on May 11. Dependable Corey Lanerie is on board and at 3/1 on the ML, it may bring home all the gold in the Handicapping Contest! Bet #8 #10 Win
Race 11: The Grade III Mint Julep Stakes rounds off the card for Fillies and Mares and I am going to take an Exacta Wager on the #1 Juliet Foxtrot who was 3rd the Matriarch (GI) at Del Mar in December with the #2 Beau Recall who got a bullet workout at Keeneland a couple of weeks ago and makes her 2020 debut having won and placed in graded stakes last year on the west coast. Bet: #1,2 $2 Exacta Box Cost: $4.
